Another holiday weekend upon us. A time when I would be welcoming summer adventurists, party goers and families to the hotel. A time where the hospitality industry would have some of its highest-grossing days. This year, however, it feels far from a holiday weekend – no big independence day events to manage, no influx of holiday travel. It feels so odd to be at home when I would typically be working some of my longest days.
The hospitality industry is still hurting. China has seen a notable increase in travel, mainly leisure and local travel. As Europe and other countries begin to ease up on COVID-19 restrictions and opening up their borders, industry experts expect to see the same uptick. The United States expects to follow that uptick, but with COVID-19 cases on the rise, many hospitality businesses are having to cut back or shut down again. While there are ways to celebrate and recreate responsibly, travelers may become hesitant to execute their summer plans. I know I have.
How will your long weekend be different this year? Have you had to change any summer plans?
